South Africas Telkom says there is no decision to lay off 13,000 employees.

By bne IntelliNews March 21, 2013
South Africas telecommunication operator Telkom said that it has not made a decision on retrenching 13,000 employees, or more than half of its staff, TechCentral reported quoting a company statement. The statement was issued in response to claims on the matter made by the Communication Workers Union. Telkom added that it has launched recently a voluntary separation and voluntary early retirement programme. The period of the initiative is Mar 15-Aug 31. The criterion for evaluating the results of the programme will not be the number of jobs, but the impact on the companys costs. Employee expenses account for about half of Telkoms operating expenses. Nonetheless, last week the companys HR executive also said that if the voluntary programme does not achieve the expected results, then they may have to implement retrenchment in accordance with the labour legislation.
