Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has dismissed German criticism of Tehran's decision to suspend cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, stating Iran remains committed to the Non-Proliferation Treaty whilst channelling future cooperation through its Supreme National Security Council, social media posts showed on July 3.
Araghchi said the new legislation by parliament was sparked by "unlawful attacks against our nuclear facilities by Israel and the US", adding that cooperation with the IAEA will be managed through the Security Council for safety reasons.
The Foreign Minister responded to the German Foreign Office's statement that Iran's suspension "sends a devastating message" and "eliminates any possibility of international oversight". Germany had called for Iran to reverse the decision, describing international oversight as crucial for a diplomatic solution.
Araghchi accused Germany of explicitly supporting Israel's attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities and backing US strikes against Iranian nuclear installations, which he said violated international law, the NPT and the UN Charter.
The Iranian minister also criticised Germany's "repudiation of its JCPOA commitments by openly demanding zero enrichment in Iran", referring to the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The exchange highlights escalating tensions between Iran and European nations over nuclear oversight following recent military actions affecting Iranian nuclear facilities.
The Foreign Minister responded to EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas's call for urgent negotiations to "end Iran's nuclear programme", stating such an approach questions the European Union's suitability for participating in future negotiations.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf announced on June 26 the official publication of legislation suspending Iran's cooperation with the IAEA. He noted that continued cooperation with the agency remains impossible until the security of Iranian nuclear facilities is ensured.
Kallas had previously indicated the potential resumption of sanctions pressure on Iran if progress in nuclear programme negotiations is not achieved.
