South Africas Exxaro mulls firing striking coal miners.

By bne IntelliNews March 21, 2013
South African company Exxaro Resources said one of the options it currently considers is dismissing striking coal mine workers who fail to return to work in the week of March 25, fin24 reported quoting a statement of the company. The dismissal may affect as many as 3,200 employees. Exxaro also said that it continues the engagement with the National Union of Mineworkers aimed and ending the strike at the coal mines Matla, Arnot, Grootegeluk, Leeuwpan, Inyanda and Reductants. A solution would prevent possible negative effects on the electricity generation by South Africas power utility Eskom. Earlier this week, Exxaro informed that it keeps working closely with Eskom and claimed that presently there are adequate levels of supply available. The strike began on March 5 and at the beginning included Matla, Arnot and Grootegeluk. Back then, Exxaro informed that the Matla mine has a stock of 18 days of supply available and the Matla power station has a stock of two days.
