Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev appointed former prosecutor-general Kairat Mami as speaker of the Senate. The Senate rubber-stamped the decision of the president. Prior to the nomination, Kairat Mami worked as head of Kazakhstans Supreme Court and deputy head of the presidential administration. Mami replaced Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev who was appointed director-general of the U.N. office in Geneva. Significantly, the Senate speaker is an important person in Kazakhstan as the position requires him to assume the presidency if president leaves the office.
