S&P Dow Jones upgrades Poland to developed market status

S&P Dow Jones Indices reclassified Poland as a developed market from an emerging market, with the change due to take effect during its September 2027 index reconstitution.

The decision follows a consultation launched in June after S&P DJI found that Poland’s quantitative and qualitative indicators met developed-market thresholds.

The index provider assesses countries using macroeconomic and political stability, market size and liquidity, accessibility to foreign investors and the efficiency of investment processes.

S&P Dow Jones Indices said Poland had remained resilient through economic and political challenges, including inflationary pressure and delays to public investment.

“This is another confirmation of Poland’s growing position. S&P DJI has just changed Poland’s classification from an emerging to a developed market. Poland is now the EU’s fastest-growing large economy,” Poland's Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański said on X.

The move amounts to recognition of the maturity of Poland’s economy and capital market and will alter the benchmark universe in which Polish-listed companies are placed.

That, in turn, may put them on the radar of a broader pool of funds tracking developed-market indices, although the eventual effect on capital flows will depend on index weights and the benchmarks used by investors.

The decision brings S&P DJI into line with FTSE Russell and Stoxx, which classified Poland as a developed market in 2018. MSCI, another leading index provider, continues to treat Poland as an emerging market.

Egypt was the only other country considered in S&P DJI’s 2026 consultation. It was not reclassified and remains an emerging market.
