Uzbekistan is aiming to spend $280mn on improving the water supply system in its southwestern Bukhara region.
Focused on drinking water provision and ensuring stability in water supply, the project will draw most of its funds from an Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) loan of $248.4mn.
The loan will be provided for a period of 25 years with a five-year grace period.
Uzbekistan will assume obligations to cover value added tax and provide customs benefits in the amount of $32.85mn.
In 2020, $385mn was spent as part of the first stage of water supply improvement plans in Bukhara region.
As bne IntelliNews has previously reported, Uzbekistan ranked in the top 25 of countries facing water scarcity of 164 countries surveyed by the World Resources Institute.
The authorities have this year already introduced drinking water rationing in the capital Tashkent and in many regions in order to manage the utilisation of dwindling water supplies.
