Slovakia’s industrial output increased by 3.5% year on year and by 0.7% month on month in March, registering the first month of growth this year.

“Industrial production returned to y/y growth after two months of declines,” the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic highlighted in its report, noting that “the key manufacture of motor vehicles contributed the most to March’s turnover, increasing by almost 21%.”

Statisticians also underscored that “the most significant slowdown was recorded in electricity and gas supply, and the manufacture of machinery.”

The 21% y/y growth in the car production marked the third month of consecutive double-digit growth, while the sector’s output continues to accelerate.

The electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply registered a drop of 16% y/y, and was accompanied by nearly as deep a fall in the manufacture of machinery and equipment, a sector which is in long-term decline.

Manufacture of computer products registered a nearly 26% y/y increase, while growth was also registered in the manufacture of chemicals (approximately 19% up) and food production (over 7% up).

In the first quarter of this year industrial production fell by 0.9% y/y despite the 15% growth in car production.
