Russian strikes have destroyed about 90% of Ukraine's retail-chain storage facilities, forcing businesses to decentralise logistics and move towards smaller, dispersed warehouses, Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi said, while ruling out a risk of food shortages, reported Ukraine Business News.

"There is no threat of famine," Vysotskyi said, describing how retailers have increasingly resorted to so-called "from the wheels" deliveries, moving goods between facilities rather than maintaining large stocks in warehouses. He said Russian forces had repeatedly followed relocated inventories with further strikes.

The minister called for risks associated with destroyed goods to be shared across the supply chain, as attacks increasingly target logistics infrastructure rather than only production facilities.

Valerii Kyrylko, chief executive of Industrial Parks of Ukraine, proposed a decentralised warehousing initiative known as HELP.sklad. The programme would involve standardised warehouses ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 square metres, built on industrial park sites within three to five months. Some facilities could be offered to businesses rent-free, he said.

The proposal comes amid a series of attacks on warehouses, distribution centres and retail facilities across Ukraine.

Recent strikes have hit Nova Poshta terminals in the Sumy and Kyiv regions, as well as a warehouse used by 42 publishing houses. Facilities belonging to Readeat, Vivat and Book.ua were also targeted.

Global Spirits' Khortytsia distillery in Zaporizhzhia was destroyed beyond repair, with between 3mn and 4mn bottles lost. The company valued the destroyed stock at UAH300-400mn ($6.7mn-$9mn). It was the second major strike affecting the company this year.

An Epicenter retail store in Zaporizhzhia was also hit, injuring four people. Other facilities targeted included a UNICEF humanitarian aid warehouse in Chubynske in the Kyiv region and the shuttered Karavan shopping centre in Kharkiv.
