Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) should adopt unified positions on regional developments, Persian-language Khabar Online reported on August 30.

Araghchi, who travelled to Bishkek to attend the SCO summit with President Masoud Pezeshkian, framed Tehran's participation around securing the "rights of its people" in connection with recent war with the US and Israel. Tehran hopes this signals how Iran is seeking to draw the bloc's members into its regional grievances since it officially joined the SCO as a full member in 2023.

Setting out Iran's aims at the gathering of leaders from SCO member states, Araghchi said it was natural for the country to first pursue the rights of its people in relation to the recent war and clashes.

He said the region was "turbulent" and that SCO members needed to be informed about developments and conditions there and to take correct, unified positions to confront the situation.

Iran has previously used the platform to push economic cooperation, proposing a joint SCO bank and a common free zones network at last year's summit in Astana.

His comments come after the US and Iran exchanged strikes in the early hours of August 31; the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said it fired ballistic missiles at two bases housing American forces in Jordan in retaliation for an earlier US strike on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.

Larak Island sits on the strait, where Iran has been diverting tanker traffic for inspection. Iran is reported to have been forcing vessels to pay $2mn to cross, though that figure has not been independently confirmed.

Jordan's military said it intercepted eight missiles that entered the kingdom's airspace at dawn on August 31. Air defence systems brought down the missiles that breached Jordanian airspace, the army's spokesperson said in a statement.

The August 30 US strike on Larak Island was the first known American attack on Iranian assets in more than a month.
