International capital continued to show a high level of interest in the Polish share market in H1 2026, with the share of foreign investors in trading on the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) reaching an all-time high of 73%, the WSE reported on August 31.

"On the main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, in H1 2026, foreign investors strengthened their dominant position, generating approximately PLN453bn (€104.6bn) in equity turnover, which accounted for 73% of total trading activity. Domestic retail investors accounted for PLN78bn in turnover, whilst institutional investors accounted for PLN87bn. The data confirms the stabilisation of retail investor activity and a decline in the share of domestic institutions in share trading," the WSE's press release reads.

At the end of 2024 and through H1 and H2 2025, foreign investors' share stood at 70%. The share of domestic retail investors in those periods was consistently 12-13%, whilst that of domestic institutional investors declined from 18% at the end of 2024 to 14% in H1 2026.

"When comparing the statistics with the corresponding period in 2025, domestic financial institutions are strengthening their position in the derivatives and bond markets. Furthermore, market data show that the number of brokerage accounts in Poland has risen to over 2.91mn, whilst the number of active accounts has exceeded 444,000, which is one of the highest levels on record," the release also reads.

Retail investors continued to play a dominant role on the alternative market NewConnect, generating turnover of around PLN1.93bn and securing an 84% market share in H1 2026. The share of foreign investors rose to PLN163mn (7%), whilst that of domestic institutions rose to PLN219mn (9%).

As in previous periods, institutional investors dominated the bond market in H1 2026, generating turnover of around PLN6.4bn, accounting for 68% of the market. Domestic retail investors accounted for approximately PLN2.9bn (31%), whilst the share of foreign investors was negligible at PLN36mn (1%).

"Data for H1 2026 confirm the continuing trend towards specialisation in the Polish capital market. The main market of the Warsaw Stock Exchange is increasingly becoming the domain of foreign investors, NewConnect serves as a retail market, and Catalyst is dominated by institutional investors," the WSE commented.
