Kazakhstan's Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov announced at the 16th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Tashkent that Kazakhstan plans to construct the Beyneu-Shalkar highway, connecting its western regions with Uzbekistan.
The initiative aims to finalise the establishment of the 8th TRACECA (Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia) road corridor. Smailov emphasised the necessity of enhancing regional transport connectivity, especially given that seven out of the 10 ECO member states lack direct access to the ocean.
Kazakhstan is attempting to develop regional connectivity amid its growing role within the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), also known as the Middle Corridor, a route bypassing Russia for the purpose of conducting trade between Europe and China.
