Israeli forces have struck Phase 14 of Iran's South Pars gas field, the world's largest natural gas reservoir, setting parts of the facility on fire, IRGC-linked media reported on June 14.

The attack targeted the facility in Kangan County on the Persian Gulf coast in Bushehr Province, with local sources and eyewitnesses describing a drone-like aerial strike that caused fire damage to the installation.

Firefighters were deployed to combat the blazes at the critical energy infrastructure, which forms the backbone of Iran's gas supply system, Fars said.

South Pars, shared between Iran and Qatar, comprises 24 development phases on the Iranian side and provides approximately 70% of Iran's domestic gas requirements. The field supplies 850mn cubic metres of refined gas daily, though Iran still faces a shortfall of 200-300mn cubic metres per day.

The strike comes as Israeli officials indicated they were considering responses targeting Iran's oil and gas infrastructure following Iran's retaliatory missile attacks on Israeli territory.

Any disruption to South Pars production poses significant threats to Iran's energy security, particularly affecting household heating, industrial operations, and electricity generation through thermal power plants.

The timing proves especially critical as Iran approaches peak summer demand for power generation, with the gas shortage already placing strain on the country's energy grid.

The targeting of energy infrastructure marks an escalation in the conflict between the regional powers, with both sides now striking at critical civilian and economic targets beyond military facilities.
