Lithuania handed over the investigation into the deaths of US soldiers at the Pabrade military training area to American authorities, Chief of Defence Raimundas Vaiksnoras said, BNS, a Lithuanian news agency, and, subsequently, LRT.lt reported on May 30.

“The investigation has been turned over to the Americans; it falls under their jurisdiction…We did everything within our remit. Autopsies confirmed the cause of death was drowning, so there would be no ambiguity later. Following that, we transferred the investigation into the circumstances of the incident to the Americans. I can’t say what will happen next, as I genuinely don’t know,” the general said, BNS and LRT.lt reported.

As reported by bne IntelliNews, the four US soldiers went missing at the training area in eastern Lithuania on March 25 while operating an M88 Hercules armoured recovery vehicle.

The search and rescue operation lasted a week and involved Lithuanian, US, Polish and Estonian military personnel, as well as police and civilians.

The vehicle was retrieved from a swamp on March 31 with the bodies of three soldiers inside. The fourth drowned soldier was found the following day, LRT.lt said.
