The death toll from the Air India aircraft disaster has climbed to 270, with relatives expressing anger over prolonged waits to receive severely burnt remains from the crash in Ahmedabad, Indian media NDTV reported.
A Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with 242 people aboard travelling to London Gatwick Airport plummeted shortly after departure on June 12, exploding into flames upon impact with buildings in India's deadliest aviation accident in a decade.
Dr Dhaval Gameti from B.J. Medical College's Junior Doctors Association reported on June 14 that authorities had retrieved 270 bodies from the wreckage site, with just one survivor from those originally on board.
The plane crashed into the medical college's residential building during its descent, killing passengers, crew members and ground victims in the western Indian metropolis.
Numerous distressed family members have congregated outside a local Ahmedabad hospital, waiting to collect deceased relatives whilst medical staff gather dental specimens for identification procedures and DNA analysis.
Rafiq Abdul Hafiz Memon, whose four family members perished, criticised the lack of information from officials. "We have lost our children, we are not understanding anything. Please help us get information about our children," he stated.
Father Harshad Patel voiced frustration after learning his son's remains would require 72 hours for DNA confirmation. "The authorities are trying to help but our patience is running out," he said.
Forensic dentist Jaishankar Pillai confirmed possession of dental records for 135 burnt victims, enabling comparison with existing dental documentation and X-rays.
The catastrophe has cast doubt over Air India's recovery programme following Tata Group's acquisition of the state-owned airline in 2022.
