Hourly labour cost in Romania 25% of EU28 average in 2018

The hourly labor cost in Romania’s economy, not including the agriculture and public administration sectors, increased by 11% to €6.9 in 2018, from €6.2 in 2017, Eurostat informed. In local currency, the labour cost in Romania soared by 13.3% to RON31.9.

It was the second year in a row that Romania posted the highest rise in labour costs among the 28 EU member states, after the 17.1% advance in 2017.

However, Romania remains one of the countries with the lowest labour costs in the EU. Only Bulgaria has a lower cost than Romania (€5.4). The labour cost increased by 2.7% on average in the European Union and by 2.2% in the euro area.

In absolute terms, the average cost of labour in the EU was four times higher than in Romania (€27.4) in 2018 and even higher (€30.6) in the euro area. The EU states with the highest hourly labour costs in 2018 were Denmark (€43.5), Luxembourg (€40.6), Belgium (€39.7), Sweden (€36.6), the Netherlands (€35.9 ), and France (€35.8 ).
