US clean energy firm Nikkiso has be awarded a contract to offer LNG regasification equipment to Bahamas’ New Providence Gas Project, the California-based company announced on August 19.

The contract has been awarded to Nikkiso by NPG, which is a joint venture that is being formed by Shell and a subsidiary of domestic firm Freeport Oil Company Limited (FOCOL Holdings). Cryogenic equipment will also be provided by Nikkiso.

Nikkiso will play a key role in helping the Bahamas develop its first LNG import terminal at Clifton Pier on the west coast of New Providence Island.

The project plays a critical role in Bahamas’ energy transition as retrofitted gas turbines will now be run on LNG instead of diesel, helping the Caribbean country lower its carbon footprint.

Nikkiso’s regasification system will include high-pressure submerged centrifugal pumps, which will be installed in a modular pump skid.

It will also utilise a gas-fired water bath vaporizer and power distribution and control systems, as well as an insulated pipeline with a vacuum jacketed system. Nikkiso will also be responsible for providing engineering services for the project.

“Nikkiso’s LNG-to-power solution is preferred by our customers because we can engineer, manufacture, install and service critical equipment which helps provide power via natural gas in some of the world’s most remote locations,” Nikkiso’s President and CEO Adrian Ridge said in a statement.

“This project is a good insight into how important cryogenic equipment is for companies like NPG looking to expand lower-carbon power generation,” Ridge added.

Nikkiso’s packaged regasification system will boast a capacity of 55mn cubic feet (1.6mn cubic metres) per day. It will be a modular, standardized design giving the advantage of minimizing the integration time and lowering the cost.

The Bahamian government signed an agreement in March committing to building the country’s first LNG terminal in an effort to both lower energy costs and cut carbon emissions.
