The US government has expressed its concern over the post-election situation in Albania and the Central Election Commissions (CEC) decision to recount misplaced ballots, the US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Thomas Countryman, told Voice of America. It is essential for all interested parties to respect the law and not to promote violence, Countryman added. We remind that the CEC decided to count misplaced ballots in the May 8 Tirana mayoral elections, which gave Lulzim Basha, a candidate of the ruling Democratic Party, a 81-vote lead over his opponent Edi Rama, leader of the opposition Socialit Party and three-times Tirana mayor. Prior to the recount, Rama had a 10-vote edge over Basha. The appeal court in Tirana has ruled against the request of the opposition to declare invalid CECs decision. |
