The far-right opposition party Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) announced on July 9 its intention to submit a no-confidence motion against the government of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, in protest against the executive’s decision to pass its fiscal corrective package through a no-vote procedure. The motion will be formally submitted before parliament on July 10, with debate scheduled for July 15 at 15:00.
Speaking at a press conference, AUR member of parliament Ramona Bruynseels said the motion was necessary because "it is obvious that this government must leave office". Fellow AUR MP Mircia Chelaru described the initiative as "a form of political protest" against recent tax increases included in the government’s fiscal plan.
AUR did not disclose the total number of signatures gathered for the motion. “It doesn't matter how many signatures there are. We have signatures from AUR, SOS Romania, [the Party of Young People] POT and unaffiliated parliamentarians,” said Mihai Enache, leader of the AUR group in the Chamber of Deputies.
According to data published by HotNews, AUR (89 MPs) and fellow far-right parties SOS Romania (26 MPs) and POT (19 MPs) together control 133 seats, with a further 21 MPs unaffiliated. This brings the maximum potential support for the motion to 152 votes—well short of the 233 needed for a majority in the 465-member parliament.
In contrast, the four-party governing coalition commands 294 MPs, of which 131 are Social Democratic Party (PSD) MPs, supported by an additional 17 MPs from the national minorities group, which traditionally votes with the government. This results in a stable majority of 311 MPs, or 66.8% of parliament.
The opposition is seeking support from within the ruling bloc, particularly from the PSD, but would need at least 81 defections to reach the required majority—a scenario widely viewed as implausible under current political conditions. Assuming only PSD MPs are among the possible defections, this would mean that a majority of 61% of the Social Democrats would have to support the motion in order to overthrow the executive.
