By bne IntelliNews March 22, 2012
Serbia started trial digital TV broadcasting on Wednesday, March 21, the state-own telecommunications firm in charge of the project, ETV, said on its website. Around 40% of the country's population will be able to receive the digital signal from the initial network, which will simultaneously transmit digital and analog signals until Serbia's final full switch off to digital broadcasting, ETV said. The initial network, which is divided into 13 plus 2 zones of coverage, will emit 10 TV programs in standard-definition (SD) resolution and one in high-definition (HD) resolution. The government in Belgrade said in February 2011 it started building a digital television broadcasting network with the help of a EUR 10.5mn EU grant and a team of experts from the BBC, sent by the European Commission. Serbia pledged in 2006 it will switch to digital TV broadcasting by June 17, 2015 at the latest.
