Pakistan’s armed forces say their response is currently under way following an overnight Indian airstrike. Military sources in Islamabad have confirmed that at least two Indian aircraft were shot down, with reports suggesting a possible third fixed-wing aircraft may also have been brought down, Al Jazeera reports.
The Indian action reportedly began shortly after midnight, local time. Witnesses described the sound of fighter jets overhead, and speculation mounted that Pakistani aircraft were scrambling in response.
According to Pakistani military sources, a brigade headquarters has also been targeted and destroyed in the counteraction.
The BBC has spoken to a reporter in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, who described intense shelling along the Line of Control according to the report. The situation has prompted many civilians to flee the affected areas, and an emergency has been declared across the region.
Separately, Pakistan’s Information Minister, Attaullah Tarar, has claimed that a third Indian aircraft and an Indian drone have also been shot down. In a post on X, Mr Tarar stated: "Pakistan has befittingly retaliated against Indian aggression."
