Iran's armed forces struck a US base in the region in response to an attack on Iranian territory, Tehran's interim Friday prayer leader said, as reported by ILNA on June 6.

The comments came as US and Iranian negotiators reported on May 28 that they had reached a draft agreement to formally extend the ceasefire and gradually reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though US President Donald Trump and Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had yet to approve it, leaving no final deal in place. The draft followed an exchange of fire on May 28, when US forces struck Iranian drones and a launch site near the strait after Central Command said Iran had violated the ceasefire with a missile fired towards Kuwait.

Mohammad-Hassan Aboutorabi Fard told the faitful in Tehran that the assault on Iran's airspace and territory had been carried out through one of Washington's bases in the region, and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) aerospace force had delivered what he called a hard response.

"The Pentagon said the ceasefire was not broken, which means the balance of power has shifted in Iran's favour," he said.

The cleric said the country needed to advance at the frontier of knowledge, technology and defensive capability, framing military strength as the source of Iran's standing against Washington.

"It is our power that has humiliated America, because today the world hears only one language, and that is the language of power," he said.

He said the United States had lost its position in West Asia during what he termed the Ramadan war, describing it as the end of the American presence in the region.

"America and the Zionist regime understood well in the Ramadan war that America has completely lost its presence in the West Asian region, which means the end of their presence in this area," he said.

Citing the US political scientist John Mearsheimer, the cleric said Iranian missiles and drones that had hit US bases in the region offered clear evidence of what those weapons had done against military targets in the occupied territories, while concealment could not hide the collapse of the Israeli government.

He said the missile and drone capabilities of the IRGC aerospace force and the army were the product of science developed under faith, turning them into what he called an exceptional deterrent power.

The cleric referenced a June 4 statement by the IRGC, saying fighters had told worshippers they remained committed to the goals of the revolution both in military combat and in negotiation.

"We know that negotiation is another scene of the battlefield," he said, citing the fighters.

Friday prayer sermons in Tehran are delivered by clerics appointed by the supreme leader and are widely treated as a channel for official state positions.
