A court in Slovenia sentenced the leader of a self-styled militia to eight months in prison, STA news agency reported on March 28. A court in Maribor ruled that Andrej Sisko, the leader of the Stajerska Guard milita, tried to subvert the constitutional order.

According to the judge, he attempted to subvert the constitutional order in various different ways, including threatening former prime minister Miro Cerar in January 2017 and founding a para-military unit and then Stajerska Guard in September 2018.

The trial lasted only five weeks. Alongsiside Sisko, the court also gave Matej Lesjak, a former member of the opposition Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS), a three-month suspended sentence. The two were apprehended in September after a video of a paramilitary group parading with airsoft rifles in northeast Slovenia was posted on social media.

Sisko is considered to be the organiser of the exercise, while Lesjak is thought to have filmed it and posted the video on the internet.

Sisko is the leader of the far-right United Slovenia party. He ran for the mayor post in the Maribor local elections last year, while he was in prison. He managed to secure 1.43% of the votes. He has also announced plans to run in the elections for the European Parliament to be organised in May.
