Albanias retail sales index decreased by 1.2% y/y in Q2 2012, falling for a second consecutive quarter, the state statistics institute, INSTAT, informed. However, the Q2 drop eased from the 8.3% decline in January to March 2012. Food sales in non-specialised stores saw the largest annual decline of 37.9% y/y in Q2 2012. Sales in other non-specialised stores went down 30.1% y/y. Food, beverages and tobacco sales in specialised stores edged down by 0.6% y/y. On the other hand, sales of pharmaceuticals picked up by 31.2% y/y followed by 26.4% y/y growth in sales of household equipment. Turnover in books, newspapers, stationery also increased, by 12.7% y/y in Q2. The index of trade and maintenance of motor vehicles increased by 10.5% y/y, reflecting a 31.3% y/y growth in the fuel sales. In terms of quarterly comparison, Albanias Q2 retail sales increased by 9.8% q/q. All groups comprising the overall index registered q/q expansion in Q1, which in our view, could be partly attributed to low base effect.
