Albania's only urban waste recycling plant burns down

A huge fire broke out at the Everest urban waste recycling plant in Albanian village of Kashar near Tirana, which totally burnt down the factory during the weekend, media reported on April 23.

Everest was the sole urban waste recycling plant in Albania, which has a history of inadequate handling of its urban waste — until around 10 years ago there was not even a landfill site in the country. According to the Alliance Against Waste Imports (AKIP), an umbrella group of NGOs and activists, as of 2015 just 17% of the 400,000 tonnes of recyclable urban waste produced in the country was recycled.

Footage from the fire at Everest shows a huge black cloud billowing from the building. No one was killed or injured in the fire, but hundreds of tonnes of plastic inside the factory are still releasing toxic substances, Tirana Times reported.

The reasons for the incident are still not known, but according to experts, Everest lacked proper fire protection requirements, which they had been trying to meet over the past six months, according to the article

The fire erupted in the morning of April 22, and both firefighters and the army were deployed to extinguish the fire.
