Three people including two traffic police officers died in an explosion in southern Moscow when a suspected suicide bomber detonated a device as officers approached, Russia's Investigative Committee stated on December 24.

"Two traffic police officers saw a suspicious person near a police service vehicle. When they approached closer to detain him, an explosive device was detonated," the committee stated in comments reported by RIA Novosti.

The incident occurred overnight on Yeletskaya Street in southern Moscow which lies close to where Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff's operational training directorate, died December 22 in a separate car bomb attack that Moscow blames on Ukraine—though Kyiv has not commented.

Investigators are determining how the explosive device was detonated whilst interviewing witnesses and examining surveillance camera footage.

A criminal case has been opened under articles on attempted murder of law enforcement officers and illegal trafficking of explosive devices.

The Prosecutor's Office is overseeing the investigation into the blast, which marks a rare deadly attack targeting police in the Russian capital.
