Industrial output in Slovakia deepened its decline to 4% year on year and by 2.8%, as output in most of the monitored sectors fell, including in the robust car industry.

“The lower performance was mainly due to a weaker manufacture of metals, machinery, but also motor vehicles,” the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic highlighted in its report.

May marked the fourth month this year of declining output in industry. In April, industry fell by 0.4% y/y after it rose by 3.5% in March.

“A significant, more than 56% growth in the manufacture of coke and petroleum products failed to compensate for the decline in the other monitored sectors,” statisticians also noted.

Metal production returned to decline after two months of moderate growth and fell by 7% y/y, while the manufacture of machinery and equipment fell by 13%. The key manufacture of transport vehicles decreased by almost 3% after four months of growth.

Overall, from January to May, industrial production dropped by 1.4% y/y, with seven of the fifteen monitored sectors in decline.
