Number of payment cards in Hungary down 0.9% y/y at end-2012.

The number of payment cards issued in Hungary declined by 0.9% on the year to 8.88mn as of end-2012, data from the central bank showed. The number of debit cards remained flat on the year at 7.66mn but the number of credit cards dropped by 5.7% y/y to 1.24mn. In quarterly terms, the total number of payment cards edged down by 0.4%, as credit cards were down by 1.8% q/q and the number of debit cards declined at the slower pace of 0.2%. There were 4,758 ATMs in the country at end-2012, down from 4,951 at end-2011 and 4,805 at end-September 2012.
