Macedonia's May 2011 tourist overnights down by 1.5% y/y.

The number of tourist overnights dropped by 1.5% y/y to 129,420 in May, reversing a 1.3% y/y increase in April, according to data of the statistics office. The domestic overnights decreased by 17.4% y/y to 58,323 in May, while the foreign ones increased by 17% y/y to 71,097. The total number of overnights rose by 2.9% y/y to 406,906 in Jan-May. The number of tourists increased by 1.6% y/y to 56,094 in May, slowing down from 2.8% y/y in April. The number of tourists has grown by 6.4% y/y to 180,458 in Jan-May. The May figure includes 21,779 domestic tourists (down by 18.8% y/y) and 34,315 foreign tourists (up by 20.8% y/y). The highest numbers of foreign tourists came from Turkey (7,010), Greece (3,396), the Netherlands (3,191) and Serbia (2,916). It should be noted that a certain number of tourists and their stays are not included in the above figures, because tourists, particularly those in private rooms, cottages and those staying with relatives and friends remain unreported.
