Israel's Enlight Renewable Energy has launched the largest wind farm in Serbia, the 104.5 MW Kovacica wind farm, Serbia's energy ministry said in a statement.
The Kovacica wind farm, along with the Cibuk wind farm, are expected to reduce the country’s carbon dioxide emissions by over 600,000 tonnes per year.
The wind farm cost €190mn and will produce about 300 GWh of electricity annually. It will supply electricity to 68,000 households.
Enlight started operating the Kovacica wind farm in July. It is expected to generate revenues of €28mn annually from the sale of electricity throughout the 12-year regulatory period.
The wind farm has 38 General Electric 2.75-120 turbines.
Serbia is among the top air polluters in Europe due to the outdated units of the Nikola Tesla and Kolubara coal-fired plants, according to a report released by environmental NGO Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) in February.
The report noted that Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina hold most of the places in this ranking where the third largest polluter is Serbia’s Nikola Tesla A, followed by Bosnian Kakanj and Serbian Kostolac A and Nikola Tesla B.
