Iraq's National Team for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Projects confirmed that the Baghdad government has decided to implement 535 projects in government institutions to generate electricity through solar energy, Baghdad Today reported on July 14.

Team leader Nasir Karim Qasim said the government decided to implement 535 government projects within a plan to introduce solar energy systems to official institutions, including 290 schools and 24 health centres, in addition to several ministry headquarters and government buildings.

"The National Team was tasked by the Prime Minister to supervise the implementation of these projects," Qasim said, noting that the team trained more than 200 engineers from various ministries to serve as "liaison members" to ensure sustainability of systems operation, maintenance and service according to advanced training levels.

Qasim explained that national cadres underwent three specialised courses: the first in basic operation, the second in advanced maintenance, whilst the third course will be held soon for practical training. These cadres will form a qualified technical nucleus to ensure continued high-efficiency system performance.

He indicated that solar energy systems have proven their economic viability compared to electric generators, particularly under government support that covers approximately 90% of national electricity costs, whilst battery prices and lifespans remain the biggest challenge for wider adoption of this technology.

The team leader noted that the shift towards solar energy has become an urgent necessity to meet increasing demand and provide sustainable solutions in the energy sector, pointing out that adoption in homes is more economically viable for citizens than traditional generators.

He mentioned providing trained cadres to deliver services and ensure continued high-efficiency system performance.

The initiative represents Iraq's broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and reduce dependence on traditional power generation methods whilst addressing chronic electricity shortages affecting the country.
