US President Donald Trump will meet with Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdel Rahman Al Thani on July 16 to discuss a ceasefire in Gaza and the situation around Iran, Axios reporter Barak Ravid said on X.

The American leader is seeking to resume negotiations between Washington and Tehran to achieve a new nuclear agreement, whilst also wanting to secure the release of Israeli hostages kidnapped by Hamas radicals and held in Gaza.

Trump is also seeking to take part in the latest round of negotiations between Hamas officials based in Qatar and the Israeli delegation, who will be flying in to negotiate the end of the war and the release of the remaining hostages.

On July 9, Hamas announced it had agreed to return ten hostages as part of ceasefire negotiations in the Palestinian enclave.

The same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said during a visit to Washington that there were good chances of reaching an agreement with Hamas on a Gaza ceasefire and freeing all hostages from captivity.

Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Wiktoff said earlier that he was “hopeful” on the ceasefire talks, who has historically hosted the political wing of Hamas for more than a decade.

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas on a Gaza ceasefire resumed on July 6 in Qatar's capital, Doha.

The sides are working on a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza during which Israeli hostages would be released.

Gaza’s health ministry reported that some 58,000 people in the territory have been killed since the start of the October 7 attacks in 2023, which killed more than 1,200 Israelis.

Iranian media responding to the news has not said whether Iranian officials will meet with Trump in his meetings with the Qataris.
