Albania scored 65.1 points ranking 57th out of 179 countries on the 2012 economic freedom index of US Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal. The country improved its performance from the 2011 edition of the ranking, when is rated 70th with a score of 64 points. On a regional scale, Hungary ranked 26th out of 43 European countries. The country registered progress in 4 out of the 10 economic freedom categories. Improvement was registered in terms of business freedom, freedom from corruption, government spending and labour freedom, which counterbalanced declines in monetary and fiscal freedom sub indexes. Overall, Albania was assessed as moderately free and the level of the main freedom index was 1ppt bellow the European average. In a regional comparison, Albania has outperformed Montenegro 72th, Croatia 83th, Serbia 98th and Bosnia and Herzegovina 104th. |
