Tajikistan is planning a new highway project to the east of the capital Dushanbe. The highway upgrade is set to cost $350mn and should provide a better transport passage through a mountainous area.
The current route features numerous switchbacks and presents a safety hazard for drivers. Two tunnels will be built for the project, measuring a total of 3,300 metres. Two new bridges measuring a total of 750 metres are also set to be constructed.
Renovations will be carried out on 75 kilometres of road connecting the towns of Obigarm and Nurobod.
Funding for the work is being provided jointly by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development ($150mn), the Asian Development Bank ($110mn) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank ($50mn). The remainder of the funding will likely be provided by the Tajik government.
