Slovenia’s retail sales up 1.8% y/y in May

Slovenia's retail sales increased by 1.8% year-on-year in May (chart), driven by strong growth in automotive fuel sales, while food sales continued to decline, the statistics office said on June 29.

Retail trade volume in automotive fuel rose 13.3% compared with May 2025, while retail sales of non-food products increased by 1.6%. In contrast, retail sales of food products fell by 2.3%.

On a monthly basis, retail sales slipped by 0.3% in May compared with April.

Sales of food products declined by 1.0% month-on-month, while non-food retail sales decreased by 0.6%. Automotive fuel sales bucked the trend, rising by 1.8% over the month.

In the January-May period, Slovenia's retail sales volume increased by 1.8% compared with the same period last year.

The strongest growth was again recorded in automotive fuel retail, where sales rose 7.5% year-on-year during the first five months of 2026. Retail sales of non-food products increased by 2.8%, while food retail sales declined by 1.6% over the same period.
