Saudi Arabia has postponed hosting the 2029 Asian Winter Games to an unspecified future date, with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Olympic Council of Asia agreeing to stage a series of standalone winter sports events instead to develop regional capacity in the disciplines, local development blog Nemmna reported.
The decision follows extensive consultations between the two organisations and reflects what they described as a shared strategic commitment to long-term and sustainable development of winter sports in Saudi Arabia and across West Asia, according to a joint statement released on January 25.
Under the revised framework, Saudi Arabia will host multiple standalone winter sports competitions in the coming years designed to promote the disciplines, broaden participation and develop a stronger pipeline of athletes, technical officials and practitioners.
The organisers said the approach would provide additional preparation time to support wider regional representation at future Asian winter events.
The Olympic Council of Asia commended Saudi Arabia's efforts to establish comprehensive and sustainable winter sports programmes, noting the agreed direction supports structured, phased development of winter disciplines in West Asia and aligns with the council's broader continental objectives.
Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to advancing sport across all disciplines, including winter sports, through continued investment in athlete development pathways, infrastructure enhancement and hosting of international-standard ice-based competitions as part of its wider national development agenda.
The kingdom has invested heavily in sports infrastructure in recent years as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 economic diversification programme.
Saudi Arabia has secured hosting rights for the 2034 FIFA World Cup and has made significant investments in football, golf, Formula One and other sports.
The Asian Winter Games feature sports including skiing, ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating and curling. The most recent edition was held in Harbin, China in 2025, with the 2029 games originally awarded to Saudi Arabia.
