Despite forecasts that former Super Typhoon Bavi would be a once-in-a-generation storm set to batter much of Taiwan over the weekend, the system ultimately proved more of a damp squib than a destructive force. By the calm weather and clear skies that greeted the island on Sunday morning, July 12, Bavi’s impact had fallen well short of the worst-case scenarios.

The typhoon did leave 87 people injured, forcing the evacuation of 14,476 residents and cutting power to 177,485 households, according to government data.

Focus Taiwan reports that most injuries were caused by people outside during the typhoon falling from scooters and bicycles on slippery roads as strong winds blew. Others were hurt during typhoon preparations.

No deaths or serious injuries had been reported by 3pm on July 11 the report added.

Flooding and landslide risks brought about because of the rain prompted evacuations nationwide with Hualien County on the east coast, the country's largest county, recording the largest number at 5,180, followed by Taichung on the west coast with 2,060, New Taipei, another mountainous area in northern Taiwan registered 1,698.

The storm did bring torrential rain from early July 11, triggering the highest-level red alerts for landslides and debris flows in 45 areas but no major landslides have been reported as of early July 12 even as the government issued large-scale landslide warnings for two areas in Hsinchu County and one in Taoyuan, south of Taipei.

Throughout July 11, Taiwan Power Co. said 177,485 households had suffered power outages but that electricity had been restored to 158,631 of these.

Meanwhile Taipei and New Taipei authorities will now provide additional rubbish collection services on Sunday, July 12 after the typhoon disrupted normal garbage truck operations for two days.

Bavi, weakened and downgraded to a Category 1 typhoon, has now made landfall near Shanghai in China across the Taiwan Strait where almost 2mn people have been evacuated to areas away from the storm.
