An apartment in the Russian city of Astrakhan has been found to have 175 registered residents, Astra Volga reported on October 31.
The Russian newspaper suggested that a local ‘entrepreneurial’ woman had over the past year registered foreigners from Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Iran and even Guinea-Bissau in the small two-bedroom apartment in the Trusovsk area of the city, located on the banks of the Volga River close to where it discharges into the Caspian Sea.
The woman who registered the apartment was apparently not the owner of the building but was subletting to foreigners looking for a place of temporary registration.
A criminal case has been opened. A law forbidding the “fictitious registration of a foreign citizen at a place of stay in the Russian Federation” would seem to have been breached multiple times.
