The death of Queen Sirikit of Thailand has marked the end of an era for the Thai monarchy. According to an official statement from the Bureau of the Royal Household of Thailand, Her Majesty died at 9.21 pm on October 24, at Chulalongkorn Hospital after a prolonged period of medical treatment, The Laotian Times reports.
Her passing comes at a time of heightened introspection for Thailand’s royal institution. Queen Sirikit was 93.
Born on August 12, 1932, Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara entered the royal orbit at a young age and in 1950 she married King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and became Queen Consort in April of that year. She later served as Queen Regent when her husband entered the monkhood in 1956.
Her birthday had long been celebrated in Thailand (and internationally among Thai diaspora) as Mother’s Day, reflecting her symbolic role as the “Mother of the Nation”.
In the years after King Bhumibol’s death in 2016, Queen Sirikit withdrew from public life owing to ill-health and had reportedly been under continuous medical supervision at Chulalongkorn Hospital since at least September 2019 The Laotian Times points out.
With her death will come a year of official mourning for the Royal Family of Thailand.
