The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) says it has secured clear video footage implicating the Pakistan state in an attack that killed three local cricketers in the Urgun district of eastern Afghanistan, prompting its withdrawal from a forthcoming tri-nation T20 series hosted by Pakistan, The Times of India reports.
In a press statement released on October 21, ACB spokesperson Sayed Naseem Sadaat reported confirmed the attack as being carried out by Pakistan.
The attack, which the ACB described as “barbaric”, took place in the “Sharāna, Paktika province” region as the players were going home after participating in a game, The Times of India added.
According to the report, the ACB has now confirmed that, as a result of the incident and the evidence it holds, it has officially opted to withdraw from the upcoming series.
Both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have issued statements expressing support for the ACB in the wake of the incident.
The competition will still go ahead and is scheduled to begin on November 17 in Rawalpindi, with the final of the series slated for November 29 in Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
