PetroVietnam is preparing to break ground on a major thermal power facility worth an estimated $1.3bn in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, according to POWERLINE.
The O Mon 4 plant forms part of the wider Block B–O Mon gas-to-power project, a strategic initiative designed to tap domestic offshore gas reserves for electricity generation. The facility will be equipped with combined-cycle gas turbine technology, giving it a designed capacity of 1,155 MW.
According to the development schedule, O Mon 4 is due to become operational in December 2028, aligning with the first deliveries of natural gas from Block B. Once in service, the new plant is expected to lift PetroVietnam’s installed power capacity to more than 9,300 MW, or around one-tenth of the nation’s total.
Officials see the scheme as a vital step in strengthening the national grid, reducing reliance on imported fuels and improving energy security. By employing more efficient and relatively cleaner technology, the project is also positioned to contribute to Vietnam’s efforts to balance economic expansion with environmental commitments.
