Global engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company JGC Holdings Corporation has been awarded a preliminary contract for a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project in Africa through its subsidiary JGC France.
According to the TSE-listed company, the contract will be effective until September 30, 2025 and will be executed as part of a joint venture (JV) in which JGC France is participating.
In the press release on July 22, JGC said the total contract value for the JV was approximately $550mn. The company did not disclose the name of its client and did not share further details about the contract, only revealing that the award covered preliminary activities related to the engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning (EPCIC) of the FLNG unit.
However, JGC noted that a full-scale EPCIC contract was expected to follow. “Africa is a key growth market for JGC group, and through the successful execution of this project, we aim to contribute to the region’s industrial development and the improvement of local infrastructure,” the Japanese player said in the statement.
Earlier in July, a similar announcement was made by French-based global engineering and technology company Technip Energies about a large contract it secured for an FLNG unit in Africa. Akin to the JGC’s deal, Technip’s initial contract covers preliminary activities and is valid until the same date, according to the company’s press statement.
Technip Energies, in partnership with JGC and Samsung Heavy Industries, has previously led the TJS Consortium, which completed the Coral Sul (Coral South) FLNG project in Mozambique. The facility was handed over to Italy’s energy major Eni in January 2024, following successful performance testing confirming production capacity above 3.4mn tpy.
As recently reported by NewsBase, the new FLNG unit is most likely to be deployed at the Eni-led Coral North (Coral Norte) project in Mozambique, according to industry sources. Following an April 2025 approval by the Mozambican government, the Coral Norte project is expected to achieve first production by the second half of 2028.
In September 2024, JGC and Technip Energies won a contract to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) services for the onshore Rovuma LNG project in Mozambique’s Area 4 block. The project is led by US energy giant ExxonMobil in partnership with Eni and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), with a final investment decision (FID) expected in 2026 and initial LNG production aimed for around 2030.
