Israeli media reported on March 17 that an overnight airstrike targeted Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, along with his son in a secret apartment in Tehran.
Larijani, one of the most powerful figures in the Islamic Republic's wartime leadership, was last seen publicly on March 14 at Quds Day rallies in Tehran alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz said Larijani had been killed, adding that he and Basij paramilitary commander Gholamreza Soleimani had "joined Khamenei and other members of the axis of evil in the depths of hell."
Iranian state media published a handwritten note attributed to Larijani commemorating the 84 sailors killed aboard the destroyer Dena, but the message was undated and did not constitute proof of life.
A former nuclear negotiator with the West and one-time speaker of parliament, Larijani was a close ally of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the opening day of the US-Israeli strikes on February 28.
If confirmed, his death would be the highest-profile assassination since Khamenei's killing and would deal a significant blow to Iran's wartime command structure.
Iranian authorities have not confirmed or denied the reports.
