Two explosive drones launched from Iran struck the office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the security council chief's residence in Erbil, local media reported.

The strikes mark a sharp escalation against the Kurdistan Region's leadership itself, after months in which more than a thousand drones have been launched at the territory and its western backers, though earlier attacks had targeted opposition camps, the US consulate and civilian areas rather than the prime minister directly. This latest attack comes as Barzani was reportedly acting as mediator between the US government and the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC),

The directorate said two Hadid-110 type drones were fired from the Iranian side of the border towards the prime minister's office and the security council director's residence in the Pirmam district of Erbil province.

"At 12:28 this morning, two Hadid-110 bomb drones were directed from the Iranian border towards the private office of the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region and the residence of the Director of the Defence Agency in the Pirmam district of Erbil province."

No casualties were reported.

Barzani said his personal office and the residence of the intelligence chief had come under Iranian drone attack, following an investigation by the region's counter-terrorism unit.

He condemned the strikes as a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

The attacks would not force the government to abandon its duties or the protection of its citizens, Barzani said in a post on X.

Iran has struck the Kurdistan Region repeatedly, hitting Iranian-Kurdish opposition groups such as the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan and Komala, which Tehran regards as a threat to its internal security.

Iran had not commented on the latest attack.
