Sony Group (NYSE: SONY) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TPE: 2330) will invest a total of JPY747bn ($4.7bn) to establish a joint venture producing next-generation image sensors for smartphones.
According to Jiji Press, the new company, Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp., is expected to begin mass production in 2029 at a facility in Kumamoto prefecture, south-western Japan. It will use advanced manufacturing process technology.
Sony Group will invest JPY465bn in the venture, while Taiwan’s TSMC, the world’s largest contract semiconductor maker, will invest JPY282bn. The companies will discuss possible government financial support with Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Sony Group and TSMC first announced a strategic partnership in May to develop and manufacture next-generation image sensors, a type of semiconductor.
Under the plan announced August 11, additional development and production capacity will be added to an existing image sensor plant in Koshi, Kumamoto - near the site of a recent earthquake. The facility was built by a Sony Group semiconductor unit.
