Ghanaian dancehall star Shatta Wale was detained by Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over tax issues linked to his luxury Lamborghini, which US authorities allege is tied to an international fraud network.
He was later released on bail late on Thursday evening (August 21), reports Joy News.
The yellow Lamborghini, worth around $150,000, was seized after investigators in the United States claimed it was connected to a criminal enterprise run by another Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah.
Amuah is serving a seven-year sentence in the US for defrauding multiple organisations through vendor impersonation scams.
Shatta Wale, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, surrendered voluntarily to EOCO on Wednesday, his management said.
They stressed the detention was “strictly related to tax obligations” and insisted the singer had no link to the US fraud allegations.
“I am only a third-party owner of the car,” Wale said, adding that he had no knowledge of who shipped the Lamborghini into Ghana.
The vehicle is expected to be returned to the United States to help compensate Amuah’s victims, according to authorities.
One of Ghana’s biggest entertainers, Shatta Wale rose to global prominence after featuring with Beyoncé on her 2019 track Already.
His management urged fans to remain calm as his legal team works with Ghanaian officials to settle the matter.
The case comes amid growing collaboration between US and Ghanaian law enforcement to dismantle international fraud rings. Earlier in August, three Ghanaians were extradited to the US over a $100mn scheme involving romance scams and phishing operations.
