Gaza sees 28 children killed daily, UNICEF reports

An average of 28 children are being killed each day in Gaza amid Israel's restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian assistance and a collapse of vital services, the UN Children's Fund said on August 5, Anadolu Agency reported.

"Death by bombardments. Death by malnutrition and starvation. Death by lack of aid and vital services," UNICEF said in a post on X. "In Gaza, an average of 28 children a day — the size of a classroom — have been killed."

The agency said children in Gaza are in urgent need of food, clean water, medicine and protection, adding: "More than anything, they need a ceasefire, NOW."

Israel's military campaign has continued despite international calls for a ceasefire since October 7, 2023, killing nearly 61,000 Palestinians, almost half of them women and children, according to the report.

The offensive has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine, according to humanitarian organisations.

UNICEF's statement highlights the humanitarian crisis facing children in the territory, where basic services including healthcare, education and water systems have collapsed under sustained bombardment.

The agency has repeatedly called for immediate and sustained access to deliver life-saving assistance to children and families across Gaza.

International humanitarian organisations have documented widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and residential areas throughout the conflict.
