The gross non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of Albanian commercial banks fell to 15.28% at the end of July, from 21.15% a year earlier, data from the country’s central bank indicated on September 5.
This is the lowest level of NPLs in the last few years. The NPL ratio started falling again in December 2016 and the decrease has been significant in the last few months. Albania ended 2016 with a bad loan ratio of 18.27% of total loans. The further drop of the NPL ratio illustrates that central bank’s measures were successful and provide encouraging signals for the future improvement of the lending activity.
Compared with the month before, the bad loan ratio was down by 0.3 percentage points in July. The highest level of NPLs in 2016 was registered in August at 21.44%.
The return on assets (ROA) ratio (on an annual basis), which shows banks’ profitability in relation to their overall resources, was 1.71% at the end of July, up from 0.56% a year ago and from 1.64% in the previous month.
The interest margin to gross income increased to 84.94% at end July, from 80.69% in the same month of 2016.
