The UAE renewable energy firm AMEA Power has successfully commissioned a 500MW wind power plant in Egypt’s Ras Ghareb in the Red Sea governorate, nearly 2.5 months ahead of schedule.

The Amunet Wind Power Plant has now become the largest operational wind farm in Africa, Dubai-headquartered AMEA Power said in a statement on its website on June 2.

The plant is a joint venture between AMEA Power (60%) and Sumitomo Corporation (40%). It is expected to generate approximately 2,500 GWh of clean electricity annually—enough to power more than 500,000 homes—while offsetting 1.4mn tons of CO₂ emissions each year, the company said.

A consortium of international institutions, including the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), International Finance Corporation (IFC), Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank, financed the project. NEXI provided insurance for the commercial financing, and Commercial International Bank of Egypt supported the transaction with working capital.

This project strengthens Egypt’s position as a leader in Africa’s renewable energy transition. The country’s National Energy Strategy aims to achieve 42% renewable energy in the country’s energy mix by 2030 and 65% by 2040.

In just six months, AMEA Power has commissioned 1GW of clean energy in Egypt, including a 500MW solar PV plant, Benban, in Aswan, which was launched in November 2024.

Plans are in progress to expand the existing 500MW solar PV plant in Aswan by adding a 300MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Additional energy storage projects are also planned, including a 500MWh BESS facility in Zafarana.

AMEA Power develops, finances, builds, owns, and operates clean energy projects across emerging markets, particularly in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
