US President Donald Trump has accused Thailand of reigniting tensions with Cambodia, suggesting that renewed hostilities have emerged despite a recent peace agreement brokered under his auspices.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump referred to the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord, signed on October 26, 2025 in his presence, which was intended to stabilise relations between the two south-east Asian neighbours. The agreement had been presented as a diplomatic breakthrough following a period of heightened tension along their shared border.

At the event, in which much of the focus was on himself - in part syncing with his social media post of an image of himself as ‘The Peace President’, - Trump framed the latest developments within a broader narrative of his foreign policy record, telling reporters: “But, you know, I’ve solved eight wars and Thailand is starting to shape up, You know, they started with with Cambodia, they started up again”. According to the Khmer Times, Trump’s remarks appeared to place responsibility for renewed friction squarely on Bangkok, though he did not provide specific details of the alleged incidents.

The US president went on to underline the depth of animosity between the two countries, adding: “But there’s a lot of hatred between those two people and, when there’s hatred, there’s, you know”. The comments, delivered in an informal and unscripted manner, reflected Trump’s long-standing tendency to personalise international disputes and to emphasise his own role in mediation efforts.

Neither the Thai nor Cambodian governments have yet responded to the latest remarks. Officials in both capitals have previously insisted that they remain committed to the Kuala Lumpur accord, which set out confidence-building measures and mechanisms for dialogue following earlier clashes.
