Oman has formally signed an agreement with the Washington-headquartered International Data Centre Authority (IDCA) to establish the ground-breaking “Oman Digital Triangle”, a trio of interconnected AI data-centre hubs, PR Newswire reported on September 9.
The deal was sealed at the Oman Conference and Exhibition Centre, following months of multilateral and bilateral discussions involving Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and IT (MTCIT) and the Ministry of Economy.
The pact tasks IDCA with devising and launching Oman's National Digital Infrastructure Roadmap, setting National Digital Infrastructure Standards and Education schemes, and building the Oman Digital Triangle. This will deliver gigawatt-scale data-centre capacity, connectivity, and human capital to support AI cloud providers via geographically resilient, fibre-linked hubs.
IDCA’s Digital Triangle™ model comprises three risk-diversified, fibre-connected digital hubs. These are designed to work in harmony, ensuring ultra-fast data transfer, low latency and redundancy to bolster AI and cloud workloads.
Saeed bin Hamoud Al-Mawali, Minister of MTCIT, said Oman is “prepared to meet the ever-growing global demand for AI and data centres in the most robust and dynamic way.”
He warmly invited leading AI, data centre and cloud providers to “participate in the largest AI digital hub project globally.”
Ali Al Shidhani, Under-secretary at MTCIT, said Oman’s trust in IDCA reflects confidence in its expertise. By launching the Oman Digital Triangle, Oman will be “the first nation… globally to systematically align strategy, policy, and knowledge while building a cutting-edge digital ecosystem.”
Mehdi Paryavi, IDCA’s Chairman and CEO, said: “Data thrives in an environment of trust and peace.” He likened Oman to “the Switzerland of the Middle East,” noting its stability and skilled workforce provide a firm foundation for a global benchmark in digital ecosystems.
Buddy Rizer, Chief Digital Hub Development Officer at IDCA, referenced his 18 years championing the world’s largest digital hub in Loudoun County, Virginia. He said bringing that experience to Oman, to build three national hubs and AI super-clusters, will “help shape the future of global data-centre cities.”
Gordon Gillerman, Chair of IDCA’s Technical Standards Committee, said the project offers “an exciting opportunity… to develop a robust standard that builds a foundation of governance and policy framework.”
Moncef Heddad, Global Head of Strategic Investments at IDCA, said investment strategy is central. He noted IDCA will work with sovereign wealth funds, venture capital and family offices to deliver tailored national investment strategies for AI and digital infrastructure.
